Bloggers for Japan

During times of crisis, social media becomes an important outlet–it can connect activists, aid in search and rescue, disseminate information, and raise money and awareness.

The entire world has been watching in horror as the beautiful nation of Japan has suffered a series of natural disasters, the effects of which are still being felt as its nuclear power plants are increasingly at risk.

Bloggers are working to raise money and to let the people of Japan know that our thoughts are with them. Here are some of the social media efforts we spotted…

Giving: With a Touch of “Me”

For more and more American families, volunteering has grown from a seasonal act of giving, to a year-round tradition.

Largely prompted by kids facing unequal opportunities for civic engagement, tweens (the 8-14 year olds in particular), are “mashing-up” new ways they can use their passions to serve a cause…

BlogHer ‘10 Recap

Candace and I recently returned from the BlogHer Conference in New York. Thanks to the amazing generosity of Corolle Dolls, we were able to have a booth at the BlogHer conference!

I am so grateful for the opportunity to exhibit at BlogHer. During the conference, I spoke to hundreds of bloggers about the accomplishments of the five Bloganthropy Awards finalists, and we heard from bloggers about how they are using their influence to do good by supporting causes and charities they are passionate about on their blogs, Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Winner of the First Annual Bloganthropy Award: Katherine Stone of Postpartum Progress

Katherine Stone, publisher of the popular blog, Postpartum Progress, was named the winner of the first annual Bloganthropy Awards. “Postpartum depression and perinatal mood disorders affect over 800,000 women annually in the United States alone. Increased awareness of PPD is critical to early diagnosis and treatment. For six years, Katherine Stone solely supported Postpartum Progress, helping countless women through her efforts. She recently incorporated as a non-profit with the goal of expanding the organization’s reach and effectiveness. We hope that recognition as the first annual Bloganthropy Award Winner and the prize money donated by P & G GIVE HEALTH will help Katherine Stone to accomplish this worthy goal,” says Debbie Bookstaber, co-founder of Bloganthropy.org. Candace Lindemann, co-founder of Bloganthropy.org, added: “The Bloganthropy Awards enable us to applaud the work of these powerful women and to inspire others to express themselves using social media.”
